Laxatives

Laxatives are drugs used in the treatment of constipation. Constipation is defined as infrequent, irregular or incomplete bowel movements. Constipation is not a disease, but a symptom that can cause pain and straining. A sudden change in eating habits, stress, travel or diet can contribute to a change in bowel habits that may lead to constipation. Constipation can be due to a poor diet -lack of fibre, fluid or exercise or the use of certain drugs.

Symptoms of constipation may include:

  • Difficulty going to the bathroom
  • Straining when you need to go
  • Feeling bloated or gassy
  • Painful or difficult bowel movements
  • Hard, dry stools
  • A change in your regular routine - i.e. Not having to go as often or at the usual time

If you are experiencing any, or all, of these symptoms you may be constipated. If you are constipated, don't worry. There are many things you can do to help alleviate the discomfort. You don't have to suffer with constipation. What's more - you shouldn't. Ignoring occasional constipation may result in chronic constipation - a change in how your bowel system works.

There are healthy steps you can take to relieve constipation, as well as including the use of an appropriate laxative. Of course, whenever you have a condition that lasts for more than several weeks, you should see your doctor.
