Purdue Pharma Gives United Way a
Boost
Durham Business Times, October 28,
2003 By: Paul Turko
A company striving to ease human suffering has
long supported a charitable organization, which embraces the same
goal.
Purdue Pharma, a leading pharmaceutical manufacturing, research and
development company, has been an avid supporter of the Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge
United Way since 1991. Since then, Purdue has raised over $320,000 through a
series of highly successful campaigns. This year's drive, which kicked off in
October for a month-long run, had a projected goal of $40,000. The company
garnered funds through payroll deductions, personal employee contributions
matched dollar-for-dollar at the corporate level, and raffle ticket sales.
Corporately, Purdue Pharma also contributes $3,000 towards Denise House, an
emergency shelter for abused women and their children.
The United Way's
Resource Development Manager, Sharon Kovacic, says the organization wouldn't be
able to function without Purdue's assistance. "They're one of our largest
supporters. We depend on companies like Purdue every year to help us achieve our
goals. Without them, our campaign would not be as successful. We absolutely need
them."
Joe Manias, Purdue's Director of Plant Operations, was named the
United Way's campaign coordinator this year. Manias and his team approached
various organizations for raffle prize donations; the response was
overwhelming.
Machine manufacturers, suppliers, sales and marketing
consultants, donated generous prizes for the raffles, which ranged from
high-level Toronto Maple Leafs tickets, to a free trip anywhere in North
America.
Manias has high praise for agencies partnering with the United
Way. "One agency we brought in at our kick-off assisted seniors by having nurses
treat them at home, rather than sending them to nursing homes. Another helped
youths with job hunting skills like résumé writing. It's important that somebody
out there does these things so that youths can be productive members of
society."

Hospice Heartlights: The Newsletter
of Hospice Durham
Thank You to PURDUE
PHARMA April 2002. Thanks to the financial support of Purdue Pharma, we
are able to produce and mail our newsletter. We are grateful for their ongoing
interest in Hospice Durham. We are able also, through Purdue Pharma, to use this
case study, which outlines the current philosophy of pain in our clients. In the
Volunteer Training Course we try to give our volunteers the basic knowledge of
pain management but this case study of a real person with real pain will help to
emphasize our teaching.
